Brown Derby
The Brown Derby is a 1930s Hollywood sour — bourbon shaken with fresh grapefruit juice and honey syrup, strained up into a chilled coupe. Pale gold and gently tart, it balances the sweetness of honey against the sharp, faintly bitter edge of grapefruit and the warm backbone of bourbon, a bright and easy-drinking whiskey sour from the golden age of Los Angeles cocktail culture.

Pale cloudy gold, the Brown Derby smells of fresh pink grapefruit and floral honey over the vanilla-and-caramel warmth of bourbon oak. On the palate it drinks like a proper sour — a sharp, refreshing grapefruit tartness up front, softened by the round floral sweetness of honey, with the bourbon carrying warm oak, vanilla and a gentle spice underneath. The grapefruit lends a pithy, faintly bitter citrus edge that keeps it from cloying, and the finish is long, warm and just off-dry at around 20 percent alcohol in the glass.
