The Brooklyn is a stirred whiskey cocktail from the early 1900s, built from rye whiskey, dry vermouth, a measure of maraschino liqueur and a dash of Amer Picon, stirred down cold and served straight up. One of the family of drinks named for the boroughs of New York City, it is in effect a drier, more bittersweet cousin of the Manhattan — the sweet vermouth swapped for dry, with maraschino's cherry-almond note and Picon's bitter orange standing in for the Manhattan's angostura. It is amber-brown, dry and aromatic, spirit-forward but complex, and after long obscurity it returned as a favourite of the modern cocktail revival.
