The black trumpet (Craterellus cornucopioides) is a thin-fleshed, deeply funnel-shaped wild woodland mushroom, dark grey-brown to almost black, that opens into a flaring, wavy-edged horn hollow all the way down to its base. Known as the horn of plenty, trumpet of the dead or trompette de la mort, it is a close relative of the chanterelle, foraged from the forest floor where it grows in partnership with tree roots, and is prized for an intense, smoky-fruity aroma that deepens almost to a black-truffle richness when the mushroom is dried.
