Black pepper

Black pepper is the dried, unripe fruit of the tropical vine Piper nigrum, ground or cracked over almost every savoury dish on Earth. Its warm, biting pungency — owed to the alkaloid piperine — makes it, with salt, the default seasoning of the Western table and the single most-traded spice in the world.
