Bensonhurst

The Bensonhurst is a modern Brooklyn variation on the Manhattan — rye whiskey and dry vermouth stirred with a small measure of maraschino liqueur and Cynar, then strained up into a chilled coupe. Created in 2006 by New York bartender Chad Solomon, it swaps the sweet vermouth and cherry sweetness of a Manhattan for a drier, more bitter and herbal profile, taking its name from the Brooklyn neighbourhood in the same family as the Red Hook and the Greenpoint.

Pale amber and served up, the Bensonhurst smells of dry rye spice and a faint marasca-cherry lift over the vegetal, herbal bitterness of Cynar and the wine-like dryness of dry vermouth. On the palate it is bracing and bone-dry — the maraschino contributes only a whisper of nutty-cherry sweetness against a savoury, artichoke-forward amaro bitterness — with peppery rye warmth, a herbaceous mid-palate and a long, gently bitter, herbal finish at around 28 percent alcohol in the glass.
