Porter is a dark, top-fermented ale brewed with roasted and brown malts, giving a deep ruby-brown to near-black colour, a tan head and a smooth, malty body with flavours of chocolate, coffee, toffee and dark bread. One of the first beers brewed industrially, it was the dominant style of eighteenth-century London and is the direct ancestor of stout.
