Czech (Bohemian) pilsner is the original pale lager, born in Plzeň in 1842 and typified by Pilsner Urquell: a deep-gold, soft-watered beer with a fuller, rounder malt body and the spicy, floral, herbal bitterness of Saaz noble hops, richer and gentler than the paler, drier German style it inspired.
