Old ale is a strong, dark, malty English ale — traditionally matured for months or years before drinking — that sits between everyday brown ale and towering barley wine. Deep chestnut to mahogany and softly rich, it layers caramel, toffee, treacle and dark dried fruit with the mellow, faintly winey or nutty tang that long ageing lends, for a warming, contemplative sipping beer.
