Doppelbock is the rich, powerful "double bock" — a strong, dark, intensely malty German lager brewed by Munich's Paulaner friars as a sustaining "liquid bread" for Lent, running deep copper to near-black, full-bodied and sweet with bread crust, caramel, toffee and dark dried fruit, and warming with 7 to 12 percent alcohol.
