Bancha (番茶, "common tea") is Japan's everyday green tea: a coarse, low-grade infusion made from the larger, tougher leaves and stems left on the bush after the prized spring flush has been picked for sencha. It brews to a pale gold-green liquor with a mild, plain, faintly grassy-woody flavour, low in astringency and caffeine — the plain workhorse tea of the Japanese table rather than a delicate one.
