The Manzano, widely sold as the apple banana, is a short, plump, chubby dessert banana whose dense flesh carries a distinctive sweet-tart flavour reminiscent of apple and strawberry behind the banana. It belongs to the Silk subgroup of triploid (AAB) cooking-and- dessert bananas — a hybrid of Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana — and is eaten only when the skin has gone fully black, the point at which its astringency finally clears and the fruit turns intensely sweet. It is a beloved everyday and market banana across tropical Latin America.
