Reed is the big, perfectly round summer avocado — almost a green apple in shape — with medium-thick, slightly pebbled skin that stays a deep green even at full ripeness rather than blackening. Inside, the pale yellow-green flesh is exceptionally rich, smooth and buttery, mild and a touch nutty, with a creamy density that many growers rate the finest eating of any variety. A California selection, it crops through the warm months and is widely regarded as the prime summer avocado.
