The atemoya is a hybrid custard apple — a cross between the cherimoya (Annona cherimola) and the sugar apple or sweetsop (Annona squamosa) — bred to combine the cherimoya's rich flavour with the sugar apple's heat tolerance. Heart- to cone-shaped with pale, bumpy green skin, it has soft, creamy white flesh that tastes like sweetened vanilla custard with hints of pineapple, mango and banana.
