Armagnac

Armagnac is France's oldest brandy, distilled from white wine in the Gascony region of the south-west and matured in local oak into a deep-amber, rustic and full-flavoured spirit of prune, dried fig, grape and rancio depth; column- distilled to a lower strength than Cognac and often released as a single-vintage bottling, it is the older, earthier and more characterful of the two great French grape brandies.

Dry to faintly sweet, warming and rustic, Armagnac leads with prune, dried fig and raisined grape over honey, vanilla and toffee from the Gascon oak, with apricot and orchard depth and a deep nutty, mushroomy rancio note of walnut and old leather in older bottlings. The texture is fuller and more spirituous than Cognac with a warming alcohol burn at around 40 to 48 percent, and the finish is long, earthy and oaky, growing softer and more complex with decades in cask.
