The Blenheim, also sold as the Royal or Royal Blenheim, is the heirloom apricot that Californians treat as the platonic ideal of the fruit. It is a smallish, slightly lopsided orange apricot, often with a faint green-gold shoulder and a soft rosy blush, whose claim to fame is aroma rather than size — intensely perfumed and honey-sweet with a bright, tangy acid spine that keeps the sweetness from cloying. Ripe, it turns so soft and thin-skinned that it barely survives a day in a box, which is exactly why it became the gold standard for jam and sun-drying and a rarity on supermarket shelves.
