Americano

The Americano is the classic Italian bitter aperitivo — equal parts Campari and sweet red vermouth, built over ice in a highball or rocks glass and lengthened with soda water, garnished with a slice of orange. Bittersweet, refreshing and low in strength, it is the long, sparkling forerunner of the Negroni and one of the founding drinks of the Italian aperitivo hour.

Glowing red-orange and lightly sparkling, the Americano smells of vivid bitter orange and aromatic Campari botanicals over the herbal, faintly wine-like depth of sweet vermouth, with the soda lifting fresh orange oils off the top. On the palate it is bittersweet and bracingly refreshing — a rounding caramel sweetness from the liqueurs set against Campari's rhubarb-and-orange bitterness — with a crisp effervescent lift and a clean, gently bitter finish at a sessionable 15 percent alcohol in the glass.
