Amarula

Amarula is a South African cream liqueur built around the fruit of the marula tree, a savanna hardwood beloved by elephants — its distilled marula-fruit spirit is blended with fresh dairy cream and sugar into a smooth, caramel-and-citrus dessert drink bottled at about seventeen percent alcohol by volume, and it is widely likened to Baileys.

Soft, smooth and dessert-sweet, Amarula pours pale and opaque and leads with a milky, vanillic cream note wrapped in caramel and butterscotch, the marula fruit surfacing as a bright citrus and ripe stone-fruit lift that keeps it from cloying. The texture is thick and rounded from the dairy cream, the alcohol gentle at around seventeen percent ABV, and the finish is long, sweet and toffee-like with a warm, faintly boozy tail. Served chilled or over ice it drinks like a lighter, fruitier Irish cream.
