Amaro Montenegro is a soft, aromatic Italian amaro made in the Bologna area since 1885, and among the most approachable and food-friendly of all the country's bitter liqueurs. It is built by macerating, boiling and distilling some forty botanicals — bitter and sweet orange peel, coriander, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, artemisia, vanilla and, famously, a finishing micro-distillate the company calls "Premio," made from five secret botanicals and dosed a single drop at a time — which are then blended, sweetened and bottled at a gentle 23% ABV. The result is amber-brown, medium-sweet and only lightly bitter, tasting of orange peel, warm baking spice and vanilla with a soft floral (rose and orange-blossom) lift and a clean, faintly gentian finish. It is drunk neat or over ice as a digestivo after a meal, but its low proof and rounded profile also make it unusually versatile in cocktails and long drinks. Compared with darker, more bitter amari such as Fernet or Averna, Montenegro is friendly and floral — an easy entry point to the category.
